Is it unusual for a BRB less than 1.5yr to grow to nearly 5.5ft - 6ft?

Uncloudy Jan 11, 2005 01:34 AM

I have female BRB that is growning very fast, when I look at the small deli cup I got her in last Oct. 2003 I can't believe she's pushing to be 6 feet and not yet a year and half old.
Is this common for BRB to grow this fast?
If she is a big BRB, how big do larger BRB's get?
She has been the best BRB and puppy dog tame since I got her, only once I got bitten when she was little when I put my hand in her feeding container. It was my fault and she probably thought it was more food and she released very quickly. I measured her while she was moving straight against a wall at 5.5-6ft and also one of her sheds was well over 6 feet, but I know sheds aren't a accurate measurement. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. My 2 cents, BRB's rule they are by far the prettiest boa species minus E.T.B but E.T.B can't be handled that much. I have plenty of speciality and unique kings and corns also and people are most blown away by the BRB because most people outside of the herping community has never seen or heard of one.

What are you feeding it?

Mine is on F/T mice, 1.25 years, and about 3.5 feet long.

She is fed 2-3 f/t mice every week.

No wonder she's so big, 2-3 mice a week is alot of food. My BRB eats about 3 mice every two weeks.

My BRB is 6 1/2 feet and 2 years old. I've kept her in a 100 gallon tank, and power fed her since I've had her. I was feeding her 2 small rats weekly before she was 1 1/2 years. Now I feed her a medium and a small rat once weekly. I'm going to try to post pics, be have to figure it all out first. She is beutiful, but has strange scale patterns, some of her scales are very long, and she has a ton of rainbow sheen to her all the time, but she is basically that brown/purple color with out much lighter tones in the circles or cresants. She's deffinately brazilian though. I'll try to post picks.

Uncloudy,
....5.5 to 6 feet sounds big for that age. Mine that are that age are all 4 to 4.5 feet long. I used to grow them up quicker than these have been grown. I have grown a few in the past almost as quickly as you are growing that one. A couple people who post here regularly grows theirs up faster than I do and they are having good luck breeding them as adults. Conventional wisdom says that it is a mistake to grow snakes too fast. Conventional wisdom is often wrong though. Be careful now that it is near adult size because they quit growing so much in length and can become obese. Nice looking snake there.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff,
I will start to slow down the feeding since I won't be breeding her and don't want her to get obese. The new feeding schedule will be 2-3 mice every 1-2 weeks only feeding weekly if she has pooped. I probably overfed her all this time because she's my only boa the rest are kings and corns. I wasn't growing her to be big or grow fast nor am I dissappionted at her large size now, but I don't want to have any health problems in the future with an obese snake.

Uncloudy,
...She looks very healthy. Hard to tell from the PIC but are you sure she is 5.5 feet long?

Jeff,
I will try to an accurate measurement of my BRB in the near future by having her slither next to a wall straight and putting a tape measure down, then taking a pic. It is hard to get an accurate measurement since they don't stay straight very often.
Would a string approach work better? Or maybe I just wanted to have her straight against the wall with the tape measure so their no question to how big she is. Anyhow, BRB's are incredible boas and great addition to my collection and family.

Uncloudy,
Go to 'Serpentine Widget's' (Google) and download the software (free). This is a really cool tool to measure your snakes. All you do is take a digital photo directly above your snake with a object of known length (ruler for instance). The snake can't be looped over itself. Load the photo (you may have to resize it) into the program and go from there. Really neat program.

Thanks Paul,
TY for the onfo. on that site I will have to use.
I just used a tape measure and got over 4.5ft but couldn't get the exact length I will have to try that website.
The measurements I was going off before was a complete shed skin, now I know shed skins can't used to give you the length of your snake. My only guess would be that in shedding the skin must stretch out some. My mistake on the post of 5.5-6ft, sorry.
