I am wondering, where in the USA where alligator snappers harvested from in 80'es and 90'es.
Are they still harvested from the wild? If yes, where?

They are protected now in alot of states because of alot of commercial harvesting done back in the days. In the south mainly, is basically where, all the southern states that they were found in, they were taken from, I'd say Louisiana the most.

i live in louisiana, and until recently, we were the only state in the US that did not protect the snapper as a threatened species. the new laws apply specifically to the alligator snapper, and only restrict the number that may be harvested. there are still some real monsters out there in the waters here, but fewer than there were even when i was a child, and i'm not THAT old. you can still scare up a gator turtle without much trouble, but you don't see the 100-200 pounders like you used to.
