questions about plants and snails

KPerry1279 Jan 11, 2005 03:02 PM

Hello, When you buy real plants from the store they usually have snails on them... I was wondering if there is a reason why the snails can't go in the tank with the turtle? I know it means she will probably eat them but will it hurt her to eat them?

Not at all, snails, shells and all are a part of a RES's natural diet in the wild. They are a good source of calcium.

Snails can be hosts for parasites, the same as any live feeder. I wouldn't feed my turtles wild-caught snails for this reason, but the ones at the pet store I wouldnt lose too much sleep over, at least as an occasional treat.
