Do burms have feeding problems like BP's?

savana_man Jan 11, 2005 06:07 PM

Just wondering if burms have eating problems like ball pythons do. Like to they feed most of the time or do they just quit eatin from time to time?

Fortunatley, they arent stubborn eaters like many Balls are known to be. Most large pythons are known to be voracious eaters and will in many cases not go through fasts, seasonal or otherwise.
My BP will ONLY eat live (Ive tried everything), and even with live, he often refuses. Which is probably why he has barely grown (literally) in the past 2 years that Ive had him. Very frustrating species to work with in my experience. On the other hand, my Burm (burmxrock mix) eats anything I throw in front of him and would probably not refuse double what I offer him in one sitting. He has never once refused a meal since he was a hatchling. He eaten everything from mice, quail, rats, and rabbits and never once gave me a problem with making the switch.
Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking Burms dont stop eating.

Thanks. Thats the reason I am getting rid of my ball. I can't keep live rats or go to the pet store every week. I'm still deciding between a burm and the red tail boa.

My suggestion would be to get a burm only if you are sure you can house it and care for an animal of this size. The only reason Im telling you this is that going from a ball to a burm is a huge jump. I would probably get a red tail if I were you. If you do end up getting a burm, make sure you have a room big enough to keep an 8foot long cage and have no problem caring for it long term both financially and mentally. As many people on here will tell you, there are just too many burms abandoned because the owner didnt know what they were getting into. Not saying you dont, just stating the facts.

Yeah I know. The burm was mainly my dads idea. Housing wouldn't be a problem, but I wouldn't want to be bugging my parents for money to feed him. So I may stick to red tails for now and maybe move onto bigger during or after college or something. Thanks for all the help you guys have given.

Well, for a burm you'd need someone to spot/assist you when you do anything whatsoever with it after it gets half grown or so. Just for safety reasons.
If you go for either a burm or red tail, please consider adoption (good karma)
Keep in mind your other non-boid/python snakey options too. There are the black and white california kings, the classic but pretty corn snake, massive pine, bulls and black rat snakes (8 ft sometimes), cute pudgy hognoses and so on. The Cal kings, black rat snakes and corns come in a variety of striking morphs. And with the exception of the occasional finicky hognose, the above recommendations are known to be pretty good feeders as well as pretty good tempered. Whatever you decide, good luck!

I've thought about lots of different animals even fish. Lol! It came down to that me and my dad (who would have helped with the burm) have decided to go the red tail route for now. He said after college me and him will get an albino burm (hes always wanted one). I love burms, but I will be 17 in two weeks and I think they may be to expensive to feed while i'm paying insurance and everything on a car.
