Best UVB lighting?

ejtchr Jan 11, 2005 09:10 PM

Can anyone help me decide what is the best UVB light for my Panther Chameleons housed in all screen cages?

I've tried lots of the mercury vapor bulbs. Most of them usually don't provide enough heat or in the case of "Capture the Sun" bulbs, they'll cook your Chameleon. I finally went back to the Reptisun 5.0 bulbs, and that is what I recommend. I'm sure you'll get lots of different opionions for this.

I agree. I had problems with PowerSun 100w (ZooMed) and had it replaced twice in a year. This last time they "upgraded" me to the 160, but I think it is frying Luna! I am back to repti-sun 5.0 now.

I have been using the Reptiglo 8.0 for over 2 years with no discernible difference from the more expensive ZooMed 5.0 product (I had the 5.0 and the 8.0 running on 2 separate jacksons cages for a year...I replaced the 5.0 twice in that year but only once for the 8.0). I now use the Reptiglo for all my chams, torts and the refugium in my saltwater aquarium.

I get them pretty cheap at petguys.com (they're in california so shipping to the east coast is slow but the price is right).

Hey Raf,

Did you replace the 5.0 b/c it is recommended or b/c you had a problem with it? I know that exo-terra recommends their 8.0 for desert reptiles and never quite understood that...sun is sun. I mean I understand that a cham's needs is different from a beardie's needs but I would think a cham would take shelter when needed. Shed some light (haha!) on the genius' head

I replaced the 5.0 per ZooMed's requirements and advice. I dont think 5.0 and 8.0 differ much. I prefer to use the stronger one just in case. My chams look good and my plants are proliferating.
