Baby Bairdi Brumating

How long should she stay in brumation? I put her in 2 days ago and she seems fine. She's just moving a lot less.

has she been eating well? How long since she last ate? Why are you brumating, by the way? As babies it's not even necessary...

She was not feeding well. That is why I brumated her. I'm speaking in past tense because this morning I looked in her box to find her dead. This has not been my month for snakes. All of my problem feeders have died...been 6 all babies. Three of the 6 most likely just needed to be brumated, but I waited too long. Thank goodness all the rest of my snakes are eating well. I was almost ready to start giving all of my critters away, but I think the worst has passed.

This is the first situation that I've had to brumate a snake. I hear most of the time it does not need to be done unless you are planning on breeding. I am very new to brumation.

How does one know when to brumate and when not to?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I just found my male neonate texas bairdi dead in his cage on saturday evening.

Brumation is not NECESSARY unless you are going to breed. Snakes with even a strong feeding response can lose it somewhat - or totally during the winter months. I've been told just keep them like that and theyll start eating in a matter of weeks.

However brumation can give a good jump-start on eating. I tried brumating mine, I also think I was too late on doing this, to try and get him to eat. He only ate two times once I got him, a month apart.

Some are just born without really a chance in the world, and even though it's sad to see them go, at least you dont have to worry about them starving themselves any more.

Again, sorry about your loss.
