red tailed boa feeding problem??????

ccarr Jan 12, 2005 09:18 AM

I have recently purchased a red tailed boa.He is pretty young, about a 2ft right now.I tried feeding him a thawed mouse. He would not take it.I know you it's not recommended to feed them live but i did ,just to get him jump started. He took that with no problem. Now, i'm trying to feed him again (a dead mouse) and he won't take it.Does anyone have any suggestions to make him want to eat an already dead mouse???

Thank you,Corey

A lady I know had a ball python who wouldn't eat either, and she found an idea that you boil the mouse in chicken broth to thaw it. The ball python ate it right away.

Sometimes it helps to wiggle the mouse. I soak it in hot water, dry it off and us hemostats or tongs and wiggle it slowly a few inches from the snake..Somtimes you have to be patient and wiggle it for quite a while, maybe try standing out of the snakes vision as well if its skitish..I got a bp and a boa to take frozen/ thawed this way and both had been fed live feeders by thier previous owners.Hope this helps. Ive never tried the chicken broth thing but it sounds interesting to try.
