Photos and some Newbie Questions

DominaEve Jan 12, 2005 10:09 AM

Hello everyone. Sorry for the lack of posting. Life has gotten crazy with all of these storms blowing through in this area. We are working on our 4th foot of snow and the temperatures are freezing!

Anyhow, Eve shed three nights ago and yesterday I got some fantastic pictures of her! I really wanted to share them with you all. The link is below, andthey are under the photo album titles "Eve." The ones I just took are the last three. I used a multi spectrum light, and it really captured her colors! Before I was using my home lighting, or just the camera flash. As you can see, the ones previously taken are much darker. Now, she looks real orange in the new photos. No, I didn't touch them up at all! BUT ... she is not that orange in person. I would say her coloration is inbetween the photos I took before and these new ones. The lighting I used really brought out her orange. Enjoy!

Now for my VERY newbie questions!

What does CB and WB mean?

And what does the term "boids" refer to? Is it tech. for snake?

Now for my VERY newbie questions!

What does CB and WB mean? CB = Captive Bred WB = Wild Born/Bred but you may have meant WC = Wild caught

And what does the term "boids" refer to? Is it tech. for snake? boids refers to the boa family of snakes. Like rainbow boas, columbian boas, or any type of boa species to name a few.

...The class is Reptilia. The Order is Squamata which includes the lizards snakes and amphisbaenians. BTW, the amphisbaenians are not amphibians. The family is Boidae which includes the subfamilies of Boas and Pythons and also the Round Island Boas and Dwarf Boas. Our Rainbow Boas belong to the Genus Epicrates and species cenchria. From HS biology do you remember King Phillip Came Over From Greater spain subspecies to help you remember Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, species and subspecies? In the science of taxonomy all living things are labled by Genus and species and oftentimes subspecies. The Genus is capitalized and the species and subspecies are not capitalized. So our Brazilian Rainbow Boas are labled with the trinomial: Epicrates cenchria cenchria. There is a long running back and forth arguement among the taxonomists about whether classification to the subspecific level is valid. The book "Snakes" by Harry Greene is a great reference for learning more about this subject and much more.

I'm a first month 11th grader drop out! I never learned that...or I forgot it. No one knows (hopefully) I'm uneducated...except for the last post with all the spelling errors. I really need to use the PREVIEW option. My Jr. H and HS years were horrible. I bet I can remember that anacronym. What was it again?

The process known as public school has very little to do with education. You are educated, there is no doubt about that. I am grateful for your contribution to this forum..........

Noel,
...The lighting really does make a difference shooting PICs. I know it is too cold there now but after it warms up take your BRB outside and see how much better it looks than it looks inside under unnatural lighting. I shoot most of my PICs indoors with just regular room lighting and the camera flash and most of the time they turn out looking better than the snake looks indoors but about like what they look like outdoors under natural light.

Beautful pics of your BRB Noel.
It's great also to see the pics with people handling. It shows your BRB gets alot TLC. Awesome!
I noticed your BRB was in an aquarium/terrerium type set up.
How do u keep the humdity up in that set up?
The reason why I asked is because when my BRB I had her in a terrerium with a screen top and had to take plastic cutting boards and poke holes in them to keep the humdity high, plus I live in a dry arid desert where the normal humidity is around 15-20%. It got much easier for me when I got a Boaphile that hold humditiy better and the husbandry was much easier. Again nice pics.

Thank you very much! I do handle my snakes a lot, by the way. I get them out about every other night. Because I dance with Eve (and will eventually with Leviathan), I think it's a good idea for me to keep her used to being out and about.

I actually have plexi-glass over half of the top of the terrarium/habitat. I mist it down real good about every other day. During the day I can get the humidity to stay around 50%, and atnight at about 80%. I have found that the higher temps during the day burn off a lot of the moisture. I was actually going to ask how everyone else keeps their humidity up. I have a heck of a time with it. I am always fiddling with the heat and moisture. Has anyone experimented wit the waterfalls? I had thought about putting one in my habitats in the hopesmoving water would add more moisture.

I have never heard of a Boaphile. What is it?

Noel,
...You might try experimenting with covering 90 to 95 percent of the top rather than just half of it. Be careful because this will also hold in the heat along with the humidity. Boaphiles are cages made by Jeff Ronne who calls himself the Boaphile.

Thanks Jeff ~

I have a temp guage and controller in Eve's terrarium, so I am not too worried about over-heating. At night I can take the top off and let it cool for a few minutes, then recover and set the heat to a lower temp. Thanks for the advice. I think I will try coveriing more.

What do you suggest as average day and night temps? From what I gather, 85 during the day, and 75-80 at night. Does that sound about right?

The Boaphile is a cage, mine is 4'Lx2'Wx12"H. Other companies manufacture cages like these, but what I love about them is that they hold humidity up very well since I used to have a problems with humidity when I kept my BRB is a regular terrerium. Jeff is right cover most of the top. What I used to do with my old terrerium was using clear plastic cutting boards that I cut holes into and covered the whole top of the terrerium. In my cage I keep the humidity 70-80% at all times and it never falls below 70% and the temps are 80-82 hot side and low 70's on the cool side. This is just what works for my BRB. Take a look at some care sheets for the BRB like at Jeff's website and the Boa page.
It's awesome that you care for your BRB so much and handle often. I laughed when you said about the dancing with your BRB because my 4yr old does the the same thing with my colubrids(corns and kings)except she can get a little out of control and I'm trying to curtail that with her. Good luck.

Oh that has to be the sweetest picture I have seen in a long time! Thank you so muh for sharing! I am actually a Middle Eastern dancer (a.k.a. Belly Dancer ). So that was what I was referencing. I dance professionally with Eve.

Your daughter has a great start! Keep her going! I think it is so wonderful when kids can experience snakes. So many kids have it ingrained in them to be afraid of all snakes, and it is so sad, because then they become adults that can never enjoy these great creatures.

Yep, I really love my scaley babies. I think I would have them out and about all of the time if that were possible. This is going to sound silly, but when I went and saw the movie "Alexander," his mother, Olympia, was a snake lover who worshiped a snake goddess. She had snakes crawling all over her living quarters (as well as herself) and all I could think was, awe, now that is how I would love to live!!!

Are you sure that BRB isn't red instead of orange? I love it's color.

Her coloration is distinctly both; a mixture of the two. I think that these particular photos look a lot more orange than red. As I said before, her true color is somewhere inbetween the new photos and the old. She really is very pretty. Thanks!
