00235020 Jan 12, 2005 12:16 PM

Well with all the research I have done....only one conclusion can be made...anacondas are not nice snakes.... What do you...the snake owners think??

Thanks,

Chris

Well this is an issue that is deffidently debated a lot with anacondas, because me personally I have a 7' Female Green Anaconda, a 5' Male Green Anaconda, and a 3-4' Female yellow anaconda. Both of my greens are the tamest snakes ever, the yellow has struck the first day I got it, but since then shes been pretty good, and I can guarentee that the one strike I got from the yellow is more than the other yellow owners have gotten. It really depends on breeder, captive bred, or wild caught. With a good breeder such as Kelly Haller, chances are you will get a *great* green, there are actually a few people in here with a Kelly Haller green. With a captive bred you could get a pretty decent temperment, deffidently something to work with at least, and last but not least with a wild caught, chances are, well lets say you will probably end up getting bit a lot and maybe not be able to tame (in some cases). But in my opinion Anacondas are deffidently over exagerated on size and attitude.

` It's like saying shepherds are not nice dogs, nonsensical. Anacondas, Retics, whatever, are groups of individuals. In other words generalizations about their behavior, and temperament just don't give you any information. It gives you a mind-set, and that's that. The meanest snake I've ever handled was a Rosy Boa. A customer of mine has a Ball Python that is plain vicious.
` For many years it has been apparent to me that babies from tame, gentle parents tend to be that way, too. If treated properly as neonates, they can become mild-mannered and non-aggressive adults. That does not mean that you can't piss them off. They are husky, and extremely strong, even for Boids, and they know it.
` Nice? They're snakes, don't forget that! lol As they say: A picture is worth a thousand words, so here's 6K for ya. lol

Of all my snakes, my girlfriend is least worried about a bite from an anaconda I have. She is worried about what a bite will feel like but she is not worried they are going to. My female green is the most docile snake I have, has no feeding response and will only eat ft in private and she is gentle with no strikes. It is very hard to upset her and when she is upset she will just try and move away quickly and does not attept to strike. My yellows are also ones who are not quick to strike but it is possible to upset them enought to get a bite out ofr them. It rarely happens and the only real bite I have gotten from my yellows was feeding response bite from the male whem my hand was in the wrong place. I have handled many green and yellow anacondas of all sizes and I do not have many bites to show for it...this is better than most species to be honest. I have had far more bites from pythons (including ball pythons) and other boa species than i have from eunectes. So while i believe you have had a few difficult anacondas since there are plenty of wild caught individuals (which i have also seen calm), I do not think you can conclude they are just not nice. Id further your study. Also, even the most tempered anacondas i have been able to calm down with a minute of handling with experience in knowing the snake.

Last summer I had the good fortune of buying a baby male green anaconda from Kelly Haller and Jud McClanahan who breed a genetic docile line of beautiful green anacondas. Of my 31 constrictors my male grenn is the tamest by far. The only snake I take out of its cage with no hook. Never a hiss, strike, or any sign of being upset. Bill
