Get them to eat their greens

britbiker Jan 12, 2005 01:15 PM

Now I know how my mother must have felt. Although I know this has been discussed before, how do you get your beardies to eat more greens (or any at all)?

I've tried stern lectures and threats of sending them to bed without their crickets, but all to no avail. Suggestions?

Woe on we newbies.

Hi. I have read on many good websites that if you cut off the crickets legs and put them in the bowl of greens, the dragon will see the movement and eat the crickets as well as eating the greens. This has worked very well for my 3 month old. He eats A LOT of greens as well as a lot of crickets. I did that for about a week straight and now he eats almost all the greens I put in his bowl (with or without crickets). I have also heard that dropping the greens in sight of the dragon might work also because the movement stimulates them but I havent tried that because my guy eats greens very well. Good luck

Very young dragons don't always eat much greens, concentrating on crickets and other insects instead as they need more protein to grow. What I used to do was offer crickets in a high ceramic bowl (but low enough so the dragon can get into it) and I put finely chopped greens. Ontop of the greens I place the 1/4" crickets, sometimes I pinch their hind legs as well, so they can't easily get out of the bowl. You don't need to put alot of greens, just enough to cover the bottom of the dish and crickets can get under without being completely hidden. When the dragon goes for his crickets, he has a very high chance of getting some greens as well. Eventually he will develop a taste for them
