Frozen Vegys

trappercat Jan 12, 2005 06:10 PM

My little guy loves peas, carrots and all the goodies in the mixed vegys. But I just notice that all of the bags, and I checked many different companys, add salt! Is this going to hurt my little guy? Are there any out there that you folks use that do not have the salt?

Thanks much!

You can look at health food stores (or sections) - the two organic brands i have in the freezer right now don't add salt. One is Cascadian Farms and the other is Stahlbush Island Farms, but those might be local to the Pacific NW.

Cascadian Farms can even be found in Indiana, so I would imagine it is pretty national. The organic brands I have found do not have lima beans, which my Uro loves, so I have continued to use the normal brands. I think using ones where salt has not been added would be preferable, though since it is not ideal to feed the mixed veggies every day, I think that they get enough water out of the greens the other days to counter it. This is an opinion based solely on the experience that I fed poor archie mixed veggies solely for a few years before I knew enough not to, and he is a pretty healthy guy. (Though he is a lot more interactive and vivacious since I started feeding him salads)

Elizabeth or anyone that reads this, maybe you can help me on this.
My mali's love succatash, mixed veggies (peas, carrots, corn lima beans and green beans. They would eat this every meal if they could. They are also crazy about waxworms and I have recently introduced bee pollen with good success. They really don't care for the birdseed although I leave it in a small bowl from time to time. Lentils are tolerated at best.
After that dissertation my problem is loose greens. I'm trying to find different ways of introduing greens to them, but have limited success. Any ideas? I have tried escarole, endives, bok choy and turnip greens.
We do a little clover andd dandelions in the spring and summer.

I went the hard love route, and just started offering Archie greens alone, after a couple of days he wolfed them down. Sometime I would mis some mixed veggies in with the greens, and that way they minimally get a few pieces of green stuck to the veggies. In general though, Archie was not a really picky eater. He has actually gotten more picky as he has gotten older. Both my Uros really like collard greens and mustard greens, but dislike turnip greens. Once I started cutting up bits of other things into their "salad greens" such as zuchini, and apple, they dive right in. My baby was a good greens eater right from the start, thanks to Lindsay, and will not touch the mixed veggies at all. So you basiclly have two options, ween your Uro onto the "Better stuff" particularly greens, or go cold turkey, and eventually he will be hungry enough to try it.

I am having the same problem with my little guy.. I went a couple days with just the greens and he would not touch them. Than I put some peas and lima beans in and he just went crazy over them.. He is just 3 or 4 months old. Should I just stop feeding him the vegys until he will eat his greens? I am afraid he will start to drop weight and get sick. And on the other hand, I don't want to make him sick with the vegys... I guess I am a parinoid mommy.. Any help appreciated.

Since I throw most of my stuff in a mini processor I think I'll just mix the greens in with the mixed vegetables.
