Pueblan Milksnake Brumation Question

CJBianco Jan 12, 2005 09:24 PM

Is brumation absolutely necessary for this sub-species? Or any milksnake for that matter?

I know that Ball Pythons, while there is no actual hibernation, still need to be cooled down for a period if/when you intend to breed them. If there is no breeding, then cooling down is totally optional (read: unnecessary).

Is it the same way with Pueblans (or Nelsoni since I own a Pueblan/Nelsoni cross)?

I might even ask this in the kingsnake forum. I've been wanting one of those for weeks. Those White Brooksi are awesome! =)

Thanks In Advance,
Chris =)

yes, you need to have a cooling period for milksnakes if you intend to breed them in the spring/summer. Most milksnakes require this because this "cooling down period" (i.e brumation) triggers physiological changes for them to mate and produce when they get out of the cooling period.

If you dont wish to breed, dont worry about cooling them. However, they may still go off-feed, some snakes do and some dont. If they go off-feed, it would be best to turn off the heat for a month so they dont loose body weight, and then warm them back up and get the metabolism going again.

Ah! That's exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks. =)
