WoooHooo!!! Our first clutch...a few questions

PiedPeddler Jul 04, 2003 03:38 PM

Well, after an abonormal ovulation in early May (she looked like she ate a fat hamster for over a week)and 35 days after her pre-lay shed, Sweet-pea gave us 6 BIG eggs this morning. The clutch weighs 685g, Avg.114g each. Per her name, she was not aggressive when I took her off her eggs, only lightly hissed twice and now, 5hrs later she's still roaming her vivariam presumably looking for her nest. Anyway, I was wondering how long to wait before candling the eggs and how freqently to weigh the clutch to verify humidity is appropriate. Thanks in advance.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!
Paul

First Congrats on your new clutch. You can candle the eggs the same day it was laid. As far as weighting them I think the Barkers had a reply to that in their mail bag I am not sure what month. Hope this helps.

Hi there, Congrats!

You don't have to weigh the eggs, just put a cover on the container they are in inside the incubator. If, after a few days, you notice them dimpling a bit, add slightly more water to the medium around the eggs (don't spray the eggs). If they don't dimple, you have it right, and leave them alone.

Also, you might want to replace the substrate in mom's cage so she will not continue to be "broody"...by removing the smell you'll help her to get back to normal. And yes, you can candle them immediately.
