I was thinking about adding a second turtle to my tank and wondering if the species can be mixed.

Sure you can if the turtles except each other. A couple of
very important points is to get a turtle that is pretty much
the same size as yours, but remember RES get much larger than
painted turtles so you are going to need a very large tank
eventually. The second and most important is that you MUST
keep your new turtle in a separate enclosure for at least
4-6 weeks to make absolutely sure it is healthy. You do not
want to introduce a sick turtle in with your healthy one.
I have 2 painted turtles and 2 RES together now but they
were separate 4 years before putting them together. I got
my 2 RES as hatchlings and although I am really fond of both
of them, if I had to do it again I would have stayed with
only painted turtles. This is just my opinion though. They
both make great pets.
Hope this helps
Linda
