How to clean after parasites.

geicogecko Jan 12, 2005 11:21 PM

I have an old tank in the garage that I wanted to clean but it once housed a friend's pet that had parasites and the animal ended up dying in there. It has since been cleaned with soap and water but I am worried about using it. If there is a huge build up of parasites that could reinfect one of my geckos then I need to know how to make sure there is no way they will get it.
I really need advice!

If it has been long enough then the parasites probably aren't alive any more if any were left. They need a host to survive and they have a relativly short life span. But to be on the safe side you can clean it out with a bleach solution. I usually use about a ten to 20% bleach solution when I deep clean my tanks. If you want to go the extra step you could use ammonia. That stuff kills everything and is the only way to get rid of coccidia. Oh, but don't mix the two you'll get a deadly gas from the reaction. Good luck, hope this helps!

It's very true. Chlorine bleach and ammonia mixed together produce a deadly gas. As in, it will kill you. Literally.
