First breeding Attempt.... I'm not sure if it went right.

-JayDog- Jan 12, 2005 11:53 PM

I placed my male and female together tonight so they can mate. Within a matter of a minute, he walked up to her and wiggled his tail like a rattlesnake, she then proceded to turn around and raise her tail. But when he got close to her, she turned around and bit him on the neck. He's ok and didn't break skin. I seperated them for a few minutes and put them back in. Everytime they passed each other, he would wiggle his tail again but she kept walking. that happened about 3 times then I think he gave up. becuase they both took a different side of the tank.

This is my first attempt at bredding and I'm really new to this so I was wondering what type of action this may mean?

Thanks,
Jason

you need to wait until she ovulates, if you breed them when she's not going through ovulation, you will get no eggs

how can you tell she's ovulating? well..you can put her in a clear deli cup and look at her belly, if you see 1 or 2 pinkish white globular looking things this means she is ready and will probably allow the male to make his move

the fighting juts means she's not ready just yet.

How often does the female ovulate? And for how long? Does anybody have a picture of this?

Jay, I believe she ovulates from the start of the season, whenever that may be for her, (anytime Jan-June) until the follicles are fertilized, infertile eggs are laid, or they are resorbed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Will try to get pics, but if both sides of her in front of her hips are pink/whitish or you can see white under thew skin, she's ready!

Doesn't the presence of the male, all ready to breed and rattling his tail, help to stimulate her into ovulating?

Possibly, over the course of a couple of weeks. It may just as likely annoy the heck out of her.

this is also my first season breeding my leos. i'm so excited! just last night i started out my 'test couple.' i introduced my girl myrtle to my boy caiman. i figured things might get feisty (she is a real b*tch, she bit into the head of the last girl i tried to room her with), but it went better than expected. i tried introducing her to his cage, since she is more territorial, and he is very gentle (he grew up with other leos & is very mellow, whereas she has only ever tolerated the presence of one other leo, who has since passed on), and i know they are both healthy. she made a big fuss at first, so he just left her alone, and i figure i will leave her in there until she is ready & i witness some mating behaviors. even if she isn't ready yet, i have never seen caiman more pleased!

here is a link to the entry in my livejournal (which uses adult language in some entries) where i made up a bit of a story about their first meeting:
