Yogurt?

spotsnbands Jan 13, 2005 01:54 AM

While making up my usual CGD, with the rest of my sugar gliders,Rats, and Rabbit food, I was thinking about yogurt for Cresteds for a treat. It has sugar but so does baby food, the only thing I could think of was that it has maybe too much fat content. But for a once in a while treat i cant see the harm.
Any thoughts?
Joe

lizards aren't exposed to milk products naturally, so I assume they lack the enzyme needed to break down lactose, the milk sugar (which is what people who are lactose-intolerant have trouble with), so I can;t see it being healthy for any reptile. The only reason people can eat dairy products is because we do so over our lives and so maintain the lactase...other animas don't, and lose the enzyme, becoming lactose-intolerant (this is why you shouldn't give milk to cats except in very small amounts and infrequently). I don't give Gator any babyfood that has any sot of yogurt or milk producy in it, I don't want to take chances with him getting diarrhea and dehydrating.
JMO, other people may have tried it without problems but I guess they can let you know.
