Mix of uromastyx??

dabbdabb Jan 13, 2005 04:09 AM

Dear everyone,
first I would like to yhank you and congratulate for your website and its quality.

The uromastyx are getting more and more popular in Sweden, where I live, but there is still a lack of informations about them, and sites like this one helps us a lot.

I am the very happy and very proud owner of 1.1 U. Acanthinura. They are still youngsters (16 ans 18 months) and lived so far in a terrarium of 100x50*50 (that's centimeters).
So, thinking of the future, I built them a bigger place to live, and they will very soon move into a 180x100x50.
Obviously, with that amount of space, I had thoughts of getting them some more female companions.
But an idea stroke me:
would it be possible to introduce in the same terrarium an U. Ægypticus?

And more generally, is it possible to combine differents sub species of Uromastyx?

I asked on several forums, but, so far, nobody dared to give a straight answer. That's why I thought that if somebody could answer that, it would be here!!

Their natural locations are similar, the Ægypticus is calm, if big, so I think it would be nice to have them together, if possible.

What do you think???

Thank you in advance for your help. Me and some others Uromastyx addicts are expecting your expert advices.

Best regards.

Gee all the way from Sweden also, hehehehe

Anyway congratulations on your Morrocans, they are beautiful lizards. I would certainly NOT mix them .

ESPECIALLY with an Egyptian Uromastyx. I own a male Saharan/geri and a female large egyptian who at one time lived together, I thought peacefully, for 3 years.

It all changed ABRUPTLY one day when I saw the female egyptian, run and attack the smaller male saharan, and literally grab him by the back pick him up in her mouth, lift him over her head and shook him , like a paper doll.

I was horrified, extremely shocked, and amazed to see her strength and anger. She is always a very gentle girl with me.
Thank goodness, I was there, and grabbed him, and other than scared to death, and in shock himself, he was fine.

They have never been together since. So NO, I would not even consider what you are thinking.

I would breed the morrocans. If I wanted another species/subspecies I would split the enclosure up, if its that large.

Or create another enclosure, and purchase another type you like.

I'm sure others will contribute their thoughts as well.

Either way, I wish you the best, hope you will stay around and continue to mingle with us all,

We would love to have you join in and share your experiences with us.

Also some pictures of your new morrocans , would love to see them,

Enjoy the forum,

I was wondering the same thing myself... as I had asked earlier. Do you think that they got into a fight because the female was so much bigger? You had kept them together for 3 years? I was wanting to get another species and put it in with my baby geyri. I would give them each larger cages when they got bigger, but as babies, I was hoping it would be ok to house diferent ones together.
Anymore input would be appreciated!

F.Y.I.
I spoke with Doug Dix, from Deer Fern Farms, via e-mail and I asked him if I could house any other species of Uromasyx with my Sahara(geyri) Uromastyx. He told me YES, they do best with either Mali's or Morrocans. Now I may just have to get another one......

Both the same size certainly helps !

When old enough to breed you may want to seperate them.
