rehab for leos - how do i get him off wax worms?!

jheep Jan 13, 2005 12:26 PM

My albino was a little thin so I gave him a few wax worms. A few days later, I gave him a few more. I give my leos silkworms too. He ate those for awhile, but now he spits them out! I saw him feeding from the mealworm dish one night and gave him a couple more waxworms but haven't given him any more since. I'm not sure if he's been eating mealworms but I'm afraid he's going to get addicted to them and not eat anything else. I know he should eat only wax worms, what to do?!

you should not be feeding your gecko just waxworms your gecko will get over wheght and die.
you should feed your gecko crickets and mealworms. only on a speclal ackashon should your gecko eat waxworms.

LOL nice reply!ok anyhow just slowly give him less and less waxworms and more and more mealworms/crickets.Also I doubt it will die from eating only waxworms so don't be worrying.

a purely waxworm diet will not kill him unless it is a long time. If you want him to put on weight, you could try a pinkie. Mealworms really are pretty good too. Too many waxworms may lead to an OD of phosphorus and/or fatty liver (fatal) if it goes on for too long. Please do offer your leo a VARIETY of foods

Thanks for your replies, but the only way to get him off wax worms is by offering them just in less amounts? I have my leos on mealworms & silkworms. I'm trying to figure out a way to give them crickets without having them run around the tank. I may have to break their legs off. I think pinkies are too big for him yet. He refuses mealworms (unless he's eating them during the night) and spits out silk worms. Any other suggestions on getting him to eat other things? I gave him wax worms to put some weight on him, but I don't want him to be come dependent on them.

you can try:
1. starve him for a few days. They are less picky if they are more hungry. If you are concerned about his weight, this is not a good option
2. be more vigilant in watching whether he is eating the mealies. Its not hard, esp. if he's on paper towel, which he should be if he's a rehabber. If he's eating mealies, feel good about not offering waxworms.
3. You can try tricking him. Not sure what feeding method you use. But give him one waxworm and let him gobble it up. Then give him something else (like silk worm) and hopefully he will go for it and eat it before he figures t out. Sometimes this works.
4. Be conscious about your dusting. Some of mine know when they have enough calc and stuff, and will refuse dusted items, but eat plain ones. See if there is a diff there.
Good luck!
