need lots of help on materials for a custom (v. doreanus) cage

reamk924 Jan 13, 2005 02:03 PM

Hi all,

I was going to build a cage for a blue tail that will be 72"x48"x48". I wanted to put screen on just the top and front sections of the cage. What type of material should I use on bottom, factoring in dampness and huimidity? If I use plywood for the other sections...Is there a certain thickness or type of plywood that doesn't have 'fire hazard' written all over it, so-to-speak? ....Should I use a certain type of screen? Any other DIY hints would be great! Sorry for all the questions, I just wanted to try to do this right the first time...

Try using fiber glass reinforced plastic (FRP) to line the inside of the cage. It will hold up to the moisture you will need. I would strongly advise against using screen/ wire mesh of anykind anywhere in the cage but definenatly not on the top. you will lose too much heat and humidity. plus you can heat it with smaller lite bulbs so less cost on heating. I would sugest a glass or plexi glass front (or try using a window for a house) and lining the rest of the inside with frp. Put vents towards the bottom of the cage that can be opened or closed to control ventilation.

good luck,
Steve
