dead leo

mantisman Jan 13, 2005 02:40 PM

unfortunatley the vet said the leo was too sick to be helped.
I found her dead this morning, cause of death, coccidia. I will be sure to buy antibiotics tonight incase any other of my leos begin to show signs of this horrible parasite. I wish I would'e done something sooner though to help my leo, I will miss her.

Oh I'm so sorry! Atleast you tried. Keep an especially close eye on the other geckos.
Good luck!

So that others can know and therfore prevent the same problem, what is the cause and what are the symptoms? We just got some leos and are nuts about them. I would hate to go through something like that. I'm sure that you are heartbroken.

hey,
my leo was dehydrated, didn't want to eat, was weak, and lost lots of weight. its wierd, I found her the day before absolutley perfect, and then the next day, very small tail.

I'm so sorry for you and your little leo. But, Pleeeease don't wait until the other leos show symptoms. Coccidia is very contagious. And deadly. But its completely curable if you get to it in time. Coccidia can be detected with a fecal. It's an internal parasite. So you could just have the vet do a fecal on, say, a group sample from your other leos.

I really think you should do this TODAY. PLEASE don't wait. You now know what happens when you wait

leaftail Jan 13, 2005 04:02 PM

I'm surprised your vet didnt recommend that to you. Doing a fecal on your other leos right away, I mean. He/she should have.

geckogrl6 Jan 13, 2005 04:14 PM

get them in, or at least treated right away! Coccidia is like super-contagious, all are prob already infected. Don't let that guy die in vain. He's trying to tell you something, act on it.

like I said earlier, (in chat rooms) the vet was useless. I payed $45.00 for nothing. I would feel much better if i treated all of the geckos as if they did have coccidia, even if they don't have it, I will not wait for symptoms. I am getting the stuff tonight. is panacure the right stuff? I will also get antibacterial soluble. also, the leo I had that died had an eye problem, is it contagious? should I get some ointment for that?
thanks for all the help,
Craig Condon

leaftail Jan 13, 2005 04:49 PM

Yes panacur is the right stuff. Since you're gonna dose them yourself I hope you get expert advice re the dosage. And I would just concentrate on the coccidia for now and worry bout the eye stuff later.

mantisman Jan 13, 2005 05:47 PM

ok,
but do you think this stuff might be better? its ment specifically for treating coccidia.sulfadimethoxine,
Antibacterial soluble powder for treatment of coccidia. 107 grams. Make sure you have a copy of either of the Klingenberg books for dosing information. See our book section for more information.

if any works, I will go with pedecure, cheaper.
thanks,

also,
I looked at the leopard geckos poop, (one that died) it was sitting in the water bowl in the cage I was holding it in (isolated from the other lizards) it was all broken up and I could see clear, rod like structures. could they be the worms?
thanks,
Craig Condon

leaftail Jan 13, 2005 06:10 PM

"I could see clear, rod like structures. could they be the worms?"

I dont know. I dont know what coccidia looks like. But it occurred to me, if that vet is so bad that you dont even trust him to dose your geckos with Panacur, then how credible is his diagnosis of coccidia in the first place?

KelliH Jan 13, 2005 07:54 PM

Panacur is not going to eliminate the coccidia. Panacur is a drug that is used to treat nematodes, such as pinworms. Coccidia is a protozoal parasite, and the drug that is most commonly used to treat coccidia is called albon or Sulfadimethoxine. Any decent vet would know this. I would suggest having fecal floats done on your other geckos. Coccidia is highly contagious and chances are good that at least some of them have it as well. Cleanliness is of the upmost importance when dealing with this parasite. You can read more about coccidia and many other commonly diagnosed endoparasites in reptiles by clicking the link below. Best of luck.

that is very sad. i have lost a leo too, so i feel your pain. i would just treat all your leos for it, just in case, if your vet can confirm that needless treatment won't hurt healthy animals. i did that with the pinworm problem one of mine had, and felt much more secure afterwards.

It's a very potent medication. The dehydrating effects can lead to kidney problems, which isn't a risk worth taking. It's better to treat each of the geckos on a case by case basis--having them EACH examined and then treated with Albon.

Shotgunning for pinworms is much more acceptable since something like Panacur has such a high safety margin.
