Silk Worms?

digiport Jan 13, 2005 04:12 PM

Are silk worms ok to offer instead of crickets to a dragon? Read something a few posts down talking about silks eating the leaves and the beardeds then eating them and such. Someone used it as a tactic to get their dragons to eat greens. Just wondering if I can offer more silks than crickets.

Silkies will eat other stuff than silkie chow but they can't survive on it. They don't know the differance between collard greens and mulberry leaves they are brainless worms.... LOL... they do need silkie chow to survive on untill you put them in the cage though.

Yes silkies are much higher in calcium than crix as well... they are anall aorund more nutritious feeder than anything out there in my opinion... I feed dusted crix in the mornings and throw some silkies on the salad for them to eat on during the day. then when I get home I give more silkies as a snack .... This allows them to have live feeders all day long... which in babies is a must as if they don't have feeders at least three times a day, they start eating each other in my experience...

www.beautifuldragons.com has nutritional info on many feeder bugs as well as greens on the site.

just a reminder that while silkies are very healthy for your dragons... the are also high in fat and aren't always recommended as a staple but only as treats.

Yeah but for babies and juveniles the high calcium and better nutritional value outways the risk of fatty liver disease. babies and juveniles are so active that fat is burnt anyway.. it is when they get older that they become more lazy and just kinda hang around to the point that fat will accumulate to quickly and become a problem... unless there's something I'm missing? Which is possible.... I'm not a doctor by any means...

what do you think?

Yes Robert,
That is right on. There fat content is about 10% percent so as you said feed it to juvies and hatchlings and more sparingly to adults.
