tokay breeding?

fliptop Jan 13, 2005 04:57 PM

Well, it's been 3 months since I've had my female with my male tokay. So far no breeding. Granted, we have moved two times in these three months, so things haven't been exactly calm. But she's eating like a little piggy (even ate her first pinky last week) and is in great condition.

So how soon could I/should I expect breeding to take place? They're both over 3yrs, though he's considerably larger. They hang out and seem to enjoy each other's company. Any tips?

Thanks!

Ingo explained this one very well once. basically from what i recall a male may take a very long time to settle in, establish his territory and want to breed. This could be a year or much longer depending on things like if the tokay is wc and how long its been in captivity, the size of its tank, etc. Be sure humidity levels are adequate as well as temps. I guess I'm known a little for handling tokays alot but I do not handle my breeders except when neccesary for a total tank cleaning. Stress will be a big factor on if they'll breed. I've had no probs with offspring I started handling right away when they hatch breeding as soon as they come of age. good luck but it's killer waiting the 100 days or more for them to hatch. BTW nice looking Tokay you posted the pic of.

Thanks, Dakman. That's the male we worked on sexing a while back. Awesome, isn't he? That's why I want babies from him. I've had him 3 yrs, touched him once in all that time (to move him). He shares a 55-gal with the girl and a large pothos plant. Temps are fine--don't know how to measure humidity, but I mist once to twice a day and have had no problems with shedding in all these years. And he's always eaten like a little piggy, as does the female. I don't mind waiting, just as long as I get to continue his line.

BTW, congrats on your above-mentioned eggs. Any luck on albinos? A while back someone had a bunch of morphs posted. He told me they were all wildcaught. I was hoping to do some sort of breeding exchange thing as partial payment for the albino gene, as cash is always short.

Anyway, best regards,

Andy

Everything sounds well so good luck. If you do get some eggs I'd be interested in a trade or even purchasing a couple babies. One thing I've found is that when their home is furnished with lots of hidings places and ways to get out of site they are more comfortable. When I provide plenty of suitable places to lay eggs, the prefered place when provided is under the back side of a large flat rock leaning up against the back wall under the heat source. It creates a nice dark warm humid area. Since I began using this setup no eggs have been layed anywhere else. It makes a good area for the Tokays to take turn guarding the eggs. maybe as the days get longer and warmer they'll come around.

wow, sounds like you guys are having a lot of trouble with your tokays... I've been breeding them for years...my big male is cb, and the tamest little boogar you could wish for, and the female is a feisty WC that doesnt bite anymore, but she likes to jump....I keep them in a 20 gal. long with a hollow stump and and a log to hide in, with a varied diet....simple as that.... They breed like frickin rabbits! I have trouble getting rid of my babies usually! they stop breeding in the winter, and the male will call in the spring, BUT they wont actually produce eggs until I separate them for a while. try that.
