Update on Skinny Hatchling

IguanaMama Jan 13, 2005 09:02 PM

I was all excited tonight as I finally got a wet poop sample. Before this, they've been drying up before I could get to it. So I wrapped it up in cling wrap, put it in the fridge and called a few vets. I haven't found one that will just do a fecal analysis. The one place that was at least a little helpful said that it didn't sound like I needed to have it done. Since I got it on Friday, it's been eating a cricket or two or three every day except Saturday. It's been hanging out mostly in its warm humid hide, and when it comes out it is active, alert and in good tone. It poops every day.

I know that lizards don't really show they are sick until it's almost too late. Do you think I need to get it to the vet or should I just wait and see if the tail thickens? This particular vet visit would cost $80 plus $40 for the fecal and $20 for deworming. Money is EXTREMELY tight right now. Besides the money, I think taking it out for an exam would be stressful for it. I almost wish I hadn't walked into petco that day.

From how you explain it, he is sounding better.

and...I would not say its a good idea to bye a leo because you feal sorry for it. Otherwise, I would have 50.

Im sorry you are short on money, is there anyone you could just give the baby to that could take care of it?

I didn't buy it, I told them to just give it too me and they did. They had it in a small enclosure with lots of larger healthy babies and GIANT mealworms. I knew the worms were too big for it and when I pointed that out they said that they ran out of small crickets. I thought it would die right away if I didn't get it out of there. The sa didn't even realize it was not thriving. Actually, she didn't even know it was a lizard. On the adoption form she struggled and finally checked off "misc. reptile".

Anyway, the real question is, Do you think I should take it to the vet--wouldn't that be just a major stress for it? Does anyone know of a vet in NYC that would just do a fecal analysis without a full exam?

Yeah, I bought a "general gecko" once at a PetCo. The sign said General Gecko, so I asked what species it was. The reply: "It's a general gecko" duh, can't I read?

It was a Phelsuma quadriocellata.

Hey! I replied to your other post first. OK, the eating and pooping and activity all sounds very encouraging. Is the poop, er, solid or runny? Solid is good. Runny is not good. If its runny then a fecal is more urgent. And you'll just have to call around some more to find a vet that will do the fecal without the exam. Do the calling BEFORE you collect a sample

Is his tail thickening at all? Can you see any improvement?
