How do I get my leos to eat worms

IguanaMama Jan 13, 2005 09:10 PM

Both my geckos (the healthy adult and skinny hatchling) eat only crickets. How do I get them interested in worms? I have a dish of both mealworms and wax worms in their enclosures, but they never get touched. I tried holding up a wiggleing wax worm to the adult a few times and I even squeezed it a little, but nothing!!??!! Any ideas?

Are your temps correct 90f hot spot down to 75f-80f? Where is the tank positioned??? Is there alot of activity around the tank, children around? It could be through stress that they dont feel secure enough to eat! Gilbery007

Temps and everything is fine. They're eating crickets, no problem yum yum. Just doesn't eat worms.

If everything is fine. Why dont u try leaving ur mealies in a dish like u have been but dont feed them crix let them go hungry for a week or soo if they have got fat reserves this wont hurt. Sometimes it takes a while for them to realize that the dish is for there food. They do get attached to certain foods if they have been eating it for a while. you just need to keep trying that method eventually they will learn thats where to get food from but you may never get them off crix. Some leo's r picky eaters and u have to compromise.Gilbery007

Try cutting the head off the mealworm and put that end up to its mouth, worked for me.

I'm glad to hear he's doing so well.

First of all, don't mess with the little one's eating very much right now. If all he wants is crickets then give him crickets. Someone suggested letting them go hungry for a WEEK (OMG he obviously didn't see the picture), but that you obviously don't want to do with the skinny one. What Ryan suggests is gross but it does sometimes work (the head cutting, etc). You could try that with both leos. Just don't worry about switching over the little one right now if he's not inclined to. I can't believe they won't eat a waxworm tho. Once they taste one they won't stop I bet. Try Ryan's method on a waxworm too.

Oh also sometimes a newly molted mealworm (it looks white, stays white for about 15 mins) looks good to them. If you see one white, offer it to them.
