Great photos and cool catch, but where are you located and where did you find the snakes? Keep the garter too? - 42" is a monster garter. I just got back from a vacation to Texas, and I found a water snake just hanging out on the River Walk in San Antonio, pretty plump.

The garter only stuck around long enough for my friend to return with the camera and take 1 picture of the pine. It took off(towards her) and she jumped about six feet into the air. Unfortunately it went in a thorn patch and I was too excited about the pine to care. It was absolutley huge, I'm usually pretty good at judging size. Trust me, I've named scarlet kings and other smaller snakes to the exact inch consistently. Where in Minnesota are you located and what do you find there? I grew up there until I was 12 and I only remember finding garter snakes. I was there for awhile this summer and only managed to find 1 garter, pretty lil guy though.
I grew up in Edina and Bloomington and now am in college in Mankato. Where do you live now? I'm wondering what area of the states you care still finding snakes out? I never seen anything but garters here in Minnesota, but remember when I was a very little a very large snake that almost stretched across the entire axle of a truck that stopped, look at the snake, then ran it over in a parking lot at Fort Snelling state park. May have been a big bull.

I grew up in North Minneapolis by loury park, are you familiar with the area? I've only found garters and 1 red bellied snake my entire time there. Oh, and a five lined skink by Milacs, man was that cool to me as a kid. Supposedly the border of Mn/Wi has the largest density of rattlers anywhere in the world. I've found the canebrakes in N. fl but never any timbers. I was there all summer and I didn't hunt once, I'm ashamed of myself. I'm moving back to Minnesota, probably Crystal or Maple Grove this summer. I'll be damned if I don't find at least a bull, a hog, and a black rat. I especially like black rats. If I don't, I may have to come back to Fl. Herpin year round isn't such a bad deal, except for after getting accustomed to the warmer months makes the winter less thrilling. Maybe I'm just spoiled.
