I got a phantasticus.....a few questions.

johndoe10688 Jan 13, 2005 09:44 PM

Well i ended up getting a satanic and he looks pretty good. I asked for a male/female pair, but i got 1 for some reason......and i think its a male, but how do u tell. I am just worried that i won't be able to find a female now. He hasn't eaten anything yet....is there anything to get him to eat? For his enclosure right now is a 10 gal. 2 little pieces of cork bark, a piect of mossy looking driftwood, 1 plant. Should there be more plants right now? will that help him aclimate better?

Please look at and answer the questions you know...lol....i have a little paranoia right now. I GREATLY appreciate it!

John

The best thing to get them to start eating are cockroaches - Ive never had them reject these.

For determining the sex, its simple, look at the hemipenal bulges to tell for sure:

Female

Generally males are a little smaller and thinner, they often have notches in the tail as well.

Thank you....he is a male. I have NO cockroaches available to me, so any other suggestions? He seems to not be moving from the plant a lot. This room is 72 right now....is that ok? Thanks

What you may what to do is leave him be for a little while. Uroplatus stress just like many other reptiles and shipping, new housing, new owner can all stress them out. Try to put some more plants in there. The added security will only help with the acclimation and will aid in raising the humidity.

i agree with the suggestions leah and jason offered. dont really expect your satanic to leave the foliage you add to his enclosure, they're mostly arboreal which means you'll rarely find them wandering on the ground. only times i have seen my phants on the bottom was when they were laying eggs or when they were sick. i've never been able to get my hands on any roaches small enough to feed to my phantasticus, but luckily all that i have received in good shape have taken to eating. my first pair, however, were much more secretive than any others i had in feeding. my first male would actually hunt wile perched on my fingers, but he was a lot more calm than any others ive handled. but he would eagerly feed while i held him over a critter keeper with dusted crickets. make sure you're feeding him at night with the lights off. in my observations feeding in nocturnal animals is much more agressive and successful when the lights are out. be sure to keep him misted well, since many come in in bad shape rehydration is real important. they're tiny to begin with and the ribs kind of naturally show, but if you notice that the body gets very thin and flat and it still isnt taking crickets, your best bet is to find a good vet or attempt forcefeeding. forcefeeding is real tough though, especially with them being small and delicate. handle him as little as possible to minimize that type of stress.
