Favorite B grade Herp Movies? Most hated?

Drosera Jan 14, 2005 01:13 AM

There gotta be some I don't know about.

Can't say I really loved this movie, but thought it was worth watching. The movie Ssssssss where a mad scientist turns his assistant into a king cobra. Clasically cheesy plot. And loved the 70's hairstyles. I'm sort of bummed out that the squeaking red tail boa Harry died in the movie. He was the coolest character, alcoholic, but openly pondering ethical dilemmas. Also, snakes that squeak???

(don't get me wrong, if in real life hatchling snakes could squeak, that would be the cutest thing ever, especially when they nose around exploring and suddenly pull back because they think something's scary... A well timed squeak then would be so cute! Okay, enough caffiene for me. Back on topic.)

Most painful to watch had to be Komodo. Group of criminals and group of scientists trapped on island with giant lizard. Gratuitous nudity, lizard saliva turning people into rabid zombies, stiff lizard that makes the stop motion animation of the 40's and 50's look stunning. And there was that agonizing but hillarious battle scene where the humans were shooting at the lizard that was 15 feet away, just standing there and roaring. The humans shot, the lizard roared. For about three minutes...

Any that stick out in your mind?

SSSSS is certainly a classic, as is the one about the attack of the giant Gila Monster.

I would have to say the Anaconda movies would certainly rank among the worst (conidering when they were made). The first one was just horrible and the second one was laughable (I didn't see it, but a movie about an overgrown anaconda in Borneo that was actually filmed in Fiji can't be good!).

The movie "Alligator" from either the late 70's or early 80's was pretty good. That's the one about the giant alligator terrorizing the Chicago sewer system. It was actually written by John Sayles, who is a terrific director and script doctor. As far as bad ones go, aside from the direct to video CG movies like "Boa vs. Python", I remember another early 80's flick called "Venom". It was about a bunch of terrorists being terrorized by a black mamba. Not only was it exceptionally boring for a snake horror movie, but it was clear that the snake and the actors were never even in the same room!
Good topic!

"Venomous" was horrible. It was basicly a remake of "Outbreak" with infected rattlesnakes instead of a monkey. "Snake Island" was so cheezy, it was funny. As bad as Komodo was, it's actually the most realistic of the reptile movies. "King Cobra" was a mutant cobra/rattlesnake cross. The "Python" spit acid. "Komodo 2" had giant 30 ft tall dragons. There was some great info in the American "Godzilla"-"Lizards can lay up to twelve eggs!"

The really horrible Komodo dragon movie I watched was actually a direct to video thing called "Curse of the Komodo". Only today learned there's more than one Komodo dragon movie.
I have a real weakness for B grade movies, hopefully good ones, but bad ones too. So I'm taking notes.

Lots of normal sized herps on a plantation near a swamp down south. Hundreds of large toads, large yellow rat on a chandeleir gators etc. fun movie.worth renting with a pizza and a coke on a quiet evening.
