Baby V.Acanthurus, possible health problem, need experienced help please.

Argon Jan 14, 2005 11:14 AM

Hey.

I have 4 baby v.acanthurus.
I bought them when they were 2 weeks old, now they are almost exactly 2 months old.

Yesterday I noticed that 1 of them is quite a bit smaller and a lot thinner than the other 3. (The middle -sandwiched- one on the pic).

Is it normal that they don't all grow alike ? (I know from Pogona Vitticeps experience, that that's quite normal for beardies, but I'm new to monitors)

Maybe there is 1 female and 3 males ? Or hopefully the other way around ?

Should I put this one animal seperate from the others ?

Any tips, husbandry experiences, etc are welcome.

A lot of thanks.
Kris.

hello' I've been keeping monitors for a while and have noticed that they tend to grow at different rates. I also think that young monitors are similar to young bearded dragons in their social structure. They do not care about their cage mates health or well being their only consern is to eat as much food as possible. If this means eating all the food before a smaller/slower cage mate can get to it they will, its their natural instinc.
If the problem continues and the smaller monitors health deteriorates than I would separate the smaller one and keep him by him self till he regains his health.
Hope this helps a bit, good luck.

Thanks.

I'm now feeding that one seperate from the others.
And surprise surprise, he already ate 3 crickets.

I'm going to continue keeping them all together (unless I notice agression or so), but will feed that one seperately.

Greetings.
K.
