Outdoor enclosure

RyanDonnelly Jan 14, 2005 02:35 PM

I was wanting to build a cage to keep my chams in this summer outside but im not sure what i should use as the screen because i want a lot of sunlight to get through and im not sure what is best to use. If anyone has any cage designs or any ideas what is good to use as the screen let me know. Thanks Ryan

Ryan,

Home Depot sells an aluminum screen that is coated with vinyl which is great for outdoor enclosures. Of course, this is more expensive than the regular old window screen but it lasts longer. Depending on where you live, plain old fiberglass coated with vinyl might work, keep in mind that it will not protect the chams against intruders as well as aluminum will.

Home depot sells a "PET SCREEN" that is nothing more than fiberglass screen coated with heavy PVC, I'd stay away from this. Outdoor cages should protect the chams as well as provide them ample wandering space in the sun. If you use wood as the framing, make sure you use a coating on the wood to keep it from rotting from all the mistings you will do on the chams.

A simple solution is to buy one of the large bird cadges with heavy steel bars. Make sure that your guys can't escape through the bars though. You need something that is pretty strong to keep out predators.

If you want to build your own then construct a frame out of 2x4s and staple screen to the frame. Use weilded wire screen with the smallest holes you can find. If the screen is too big then add bird netting to keep your lizards inside.

Also, you may want to use a double screen so the predators with long beaks are kept 4" away form the inner screen and your lizards.
