It is okay but you might inhale alot of sawdust and everything in the entire basement will be covered with sawdust. I would do your cuts in a garage or outside...might be better.
get yourself a good dust collection system and you should be okay... and just make sure that you are able to get help if you trip and fall and cut yourself severly. get a dust mask also.

You can make a dust collection system out of some ply and shop vac. You just need to cver the bottom of the saw base with the ply and attach a hose from a shop vac. I could give better plans if I new what type saw you had. It's easy and quick and really cuts the dust factor. If you do have stuff that you don't want coated in dust cover it with a drop cloth first. Other than that stuff it is perfectly safe to have a shop in a basement.
