black throat and water monitor info

lizardman77 Jan 14, 2005 09:14 PM

hey guys,
i am looking to purchase 2 BT's or water monitors from pro exotics in the next couple of weeks. i have talked to robin and he has suggested the BT for what i told him i am looking for. i want a sociable lizard and one that i can let out to cruise around the house and not be freaked out by my dog(60lbs). i have seen a couple of pics of BT walking around people's houses and they seem to be pretty calm and inquisitive. i really like the water's as well but have not heard as much on their personalities as i have the BT. also does any body know where i can find any breeding info on either of these 2 like ages, clutch size, and things like that. thanks
ryan

we have some great Blackthroats, that is true, and they are a terrific monitor if you want a large monitor, also true. but i have NEVER been a fan of "cruising around the house" or "hanging out with a dog", just want to be clear on that, i am not sure how you came to that conclusion, i said nothing at all like that...

in captivity, monitors are for cages, with proper temps and a proper setup. cruising around the house means they crap on (and inside) the sofa, hide behind the fridge, knock the toaster off the counter, and can spread bacteria and such that is a health hazard to you and your family. interacting with other pets may mean one or both get eaten alive, killed for play, or perhaps tolerate one another (my dogs don't bother with monitors held in the hand, but i am not about to set both on the floor together).

what you are describing is a dog, or a cat, not a monitor lizard.

i would be happy to help you select a couple of great Ionides, but perhaps our communication is not as clear as it needs to be, because you have some misunderstandings of what i suggest for a captive monitor, and i am not sure how you got to those conclusions!

what i meant by the dog is that if i am holding a 30lb lizard, i don't want one that is going to go crazy if my dog is near by. at that size i know a lizard could do a lot of dmagae to me if they got really frightened. that is all i meant, i know the lizard is not going to crawl up with my dog by the fireplace. i have a basement that is well insulated and stays fairly warm with carpet, so i can close doors and he can be contained. this is not going to be a 5 hours a day thing, but just to get some exercise and check things out. i know that this is a lizard not a dog, thank you, i was just looking for soemthing that isn't going to just sit in the cage or want to run from me at every chance. i didn't MEAN to seem like i put words in your mouth, so please don't take offence. i just said i had talked to you.
