no substrate hatching PLEASE PLEASE respond

XtremeXteriors Jan 14, 2005 09:46 PM

There was a post about a week ago about no substrate hatching. today i had a brainstorm ,would this work
i got a sterilite container and got 2 larger plastic baskets that fit side by side perfectly in it, i can lift the baskets safely about 1.5-2 inches off the container floor.i can place the eggs in the baskets and still put the lid on the container can i fill the bottom up with water as long as the water doesnt come up through the bottom of the baskets and touch the eggs directly, i would put the lid on to retain the moisture, maybe even put a piece of cloth on the lid so the excess moisture doesnt drip onto the eggs directly and will still retain 95-100% of the moisture needed to hatch, now obviously i wouldnt use wood to prop the baskets up but you get the idea should i use a piece of paper towel on the bottom of the basket just in case some water does splash up

Here is what I do and I have had 100% hatch rate.

plastic container
filled with 1 inch of perlite
pour water on the perlite up to the top
put a plastic grid [bought a home depot] on top
then I put the eggs on the grid
put lid back on the box.

The eggs rest on the grid and stay at a high humidity with drying out. I do open the box every 5-7 days and wipe condesation of the bottom of lid.

Give me a call if you have any questions.

Do you have a fridge-style incubator to put those in, or something else? I was planning on making a cooler into my incubator as I will only have one clutch this year and maybe two next year. Would it work if I put heat rope in the bottom of the cooler (hooked to a thermostat, of course), then put one of the smaller sterelites using your method in there? This is what I had planned. Thanks.

Tony,

I use a substrate method. One thing I have noticed is that the temperature of the eggs does not fluctuate during airing. They retain their heat from the substrate around them. Do you lose any degrees when airing. I'm sure it does not matter as they most likely return to normal temps quickly but I was just curious.
