Retained shed

dmlove Jan 15, 2005 10:07 AM

Hey - My baby-Juvi Arg B&W tegu Morpheous was brumating, but now he is out of it. I see one his tail there is still some shed left, looks like when the skin comes out his tail just gets huge. The upper tail is really thick, but where the skin is it seems compacted. This may not make sense, but I know it is bad because it can possible cut off circulation, and I dont want him to lose his tail! Ive tried soaking and then peeling, but I cant get it off, and Ive tried olive oil but that doesnt work either! Can I just leave it be and let it do what its going to do? I keep the humidity high, around 70%. I would try shedding-aid but I cant find it in my area, and ordering it I would get it in by next week. I have done that, but in the mean time..?

Thanks

David

Try mineral oil. It sounds like you are doing all that you can right now. I've never had my tegu retain skin for so long, so I've never had this problem. How long do you soak him? Maybe try even longer.

Keep working at it with a light amount of oil, but avoid over soaking as it will work against you. Soaking removes the natural oils in the skin and will make the shed harder to come off. The shed aid should help, but as stated, just use light amounts of oil for the time being.

Try to take it easy on the mineral oil it can cause problems the next time the lizard sheds
