Sulcata baby dry eyes

ryandonnelly Jan 15, 2005 10:34 AM

I just got two sulcata hatchlings and these are my first sulcatas. I know im probably being over paranoid but i need to make sure im giving them enough moisture. I know they have a very dry climate but ive been reading that the hatchling sulcatas like it moist so i have been spraying an area of there pen with spray bottle and putting them in that little area and they always leave right away. But the point of my concern is that every morning when i wake them up there eyes seem reall dry and they will crack and ive even seen one of them with only one eye open once and so ive been dropping a drip of water on each eye in the morning and they are opening reall quick then do you think my enclosure is too dry?? Should i moisten the whole thing more often??? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks Ryan

Sulcata babies are so cute. I have two that I purchased as tiny torts and in only 15 months they are already hugh. Dry eyes or eyes that are puffy or not opening indicate to me that these babies need more soakings. I soaked my Sulcata's EVERY DAY in warm water while I prepared their food. The smaller the tort the more this soaking bath is required. And, also when they are kept indoors the dryness of the house air dehydrates them quickly. Frequent soaking increases their appetites and keeps them hydrated.

yeah they are soo tiney! i introduced them to my russian tortoise yesterday and he was being a little mean and what he doesent realize is that one day they will be 5 times his size. Then i guess i will just soak them everyday before they eat and i will put a humidifier next to there enclosure. Thanks sooo much for the response!!! Ryan

There's no need for a humidifier. Simply soak the young sulcatas daily and they'll be fine. Not a long soaking...just 10 minutes or so. Any constant humidity in their enclosure can very easily lead to respitory problems that will quickly endanger their lives. They know this...that is why they quickly move away from the moist spot you place them in. Keep dry and warm. Soak often. Best of luck...and Relax.
