Fluval question, any advice appreciated

bobla Jan 15, 2005 11:43 AM

I recently upgraded my whole system! My turtles are so happy! My question is, I just got a fluval 304 filter, There is no mention in the handbook as to how often to change the media, or how often the tank should be cleaned. With my old set up, I was changing the entire tank 2 times a week! I purchased this filter to keep the water in better condition, but have no idea how long I can let it go. If anyone knows Please let me know. It has been a week already and my water is still crystal clear! Thanks!

I clean my fluval every 3-4 months, you will notice the flow slow done a lot, which means the filter is getting clogged. The water I have been changing once a year, usually just because I want to move the tank. Other than that I just add fresh water as the water lever drops.

Thank-You for replying so quickly! I am really glad I invested in this filter, it will make the maintenance so much easier. Just incase anyone wants to know: I purchased it on line at a much better deal than in pet stores! From amazon.com, (thatfishplace-that pet place) It was $85 including s&h. One more thing! This is a great site and I would like to thank everyone , I have learned so much on how to care for my turtles and they and I are greatful!!!Laura

I have the fluval 204 with one turtle in the tank. the water stays crystal clear for 2 weeks or more. If it starts to get yellowish or murky, change it. When i clean out the tank and the filter i change one part of the media. (thats what it said in my directions)( it also said to never change all of the media at once).
Another thing that really makes the water dirty is if you have any kind of gold or feeder fish in there. If you do i suggest you get them out. It made quite a difference when i took them out of my tank.
