Large Natural Pond

qtkitty Jul 04, 2003 07:01 PM

i was curious .. if there is anything you have to do to a natural pond to make it habitable for turtles .. im going to have to take some pictures ... there are trees over it but it is sooo large that it looks like there is a medow back there but its all pond .. it has a drainage creek as well .. is that a problem ?

i need to check the depth.. but that means taking a dip .. Ehhh algea in the hair NASTY !!.. how deep does the water have to be for turtles to hybernate properly?

i want to know now so i can slowly start checking and making it better if possible for turtles

do i need to introduce some plants to multiply in it?

I live in NC so we have pretty mild winters highest 40's lowest 20's.. last winter it warmed up quick though

how big is your pond like how far across? How long ago was it built? Most natural ponds if theyve been there a while and will support turtles, will have turtles in them. No one around here intentionally puts turtles in their ponds, they just show up.

i would say its about 80 X 40 ft

I have no background information on the pond since we are just moving there .. from the looks of it its been there for quite some time .. there are trees growing around it and bushes and grasses .. from what the next door neighboor has told us there are some very large bass in the pond ... i have looked around and not seen any turtles in the pond .. but maybe i missed them .. but there arent any waterplants in the water ... so should i toss some in there and let them grow?
