Melamine VS Plywood,opinions and plans...please!!

chainsaw Jan 15, 2005 09:23 PM

To make a long story short: I'm addopting some big snakes...a few Burms,a Rock, and a Yellow Anaconda,I'm not a carpenter, and I'm far from rich!LOL!! I need to make good cages for these animals, without breaking the bank! I'm thinking 6'x2 1/2'x18",using plywood or melamine,w/sliding acrylic or plexi doors.Anyone w/plans,or helpful tips, please let me know!
Thanks in advance.

If you are in a hurry to have usable cages, melamine is the way to go. If you want furniture quality then plywood with a good stain and protectant is the way to go. Melamine is cheap but heavy. Well that about all i got there but here is a link you can adjust the measurements to your liking.

The only thing i do different on these is cut the back so that it fits inside the cage not to the back outside. Hope this helps

As froggystyle34 already indicated: melamine is very heavy. My melamine cages are 40x24x18. Each cage contains the better part of one 4x8' sheet of melamine. Empty, they've got to be around 80lbs and they're so large they're awkward for one person to handle!

The cages you're talking about would be ridiculously heavy! As such, if you plan to stack them you're talking about a LOT of weight. Melamine isn't very strong, so you'll need to plan accordingly. I'd be worried about sagging in the middle if you didn't have some sort of support or brace...

I built a melamine cage tonight. I went to Home Depot, and they had the size I needed already in 36"x16". I hardly had to do any cutting. I made mine 36"x16"x16". I haven't done the glass or the vents yet. I am having a hard time finding the vents. Does anybody know where to buy vents? Thanks, Derek
