Larvae Salamanders Dying???!!

froggiefantasy4 Jan 15, 2005 10:16 PM

my boyfriend found some salamander larvae in a stream... he has about 7 total... a biologist suggested that the salamanders are many lined salis. the baby salis are in a tank w/ their natural water. he feeds them newt pellets and fish food... theres some bark and rocks for when they mature to get out of the larvae stage... however hes noticed a couple have been dying on him... is there anything hes missing? should he be doing something else for the little guys? what kind of care should he give to them if what hes doing isnt right?

I hate to do this, considering I do this with a lot of posts, but I highly suggest you go here:

www.caudata.org

Ask someone on that forum, they are highly informed. Try here also.

Hope this helps/

The larva can be dying from several different causes,
1) temperature: this species needs to be kept in the 60s or cooler
2) insufficient oxygen, many stream dwelling species do not do well in nonmoving water as the oxygen content could be too low
3) poor water quality. Most stream dwelling species are intolerant of poor water quality and will die from ammonia or nitrite poisioning,

The items you are offering for food as not things the larva are likely to eat. Usually with larva the food items need to be alive and moving to stimulate a feeding response. In addition with pellets and frozen foods, these can rapidly pollute the tank unless all uneaten pieces are immediately removed.
