Not eating as much, etc.

MissMiniZoo Jan 16, 2005 03:41 AM

I posted awhile back about my ig not eating as much as usual. I'm still having the same problem. He eats, but not as much, but he doesn't go to the bathroom much either. He otherwise acts and looks healthy. I have a suspicion that the UVB/UVA light needs replaced, so I have ordered a new one which should be arriving by this Wednesday. My question is do igs' behavior change naturally diring the winter months?? I'm not sure if that's a crazy question or not as igs are naturally from places that don't really have a winter. What do you all think??

Their habits will change if the temperature changes. It's winter in the US right now, but it shouldn't be in your ig's habitat, unless it is caged outside. What is the temperature inside his enclouser??? remember, igs need a minimum of 88 F to digest their food.
How old is it??? What is its SVL??
Take care,

Im not sure about the SVL, but overall he is about 4 ft. long. He is approximately 3-3.5 years old. I am attaching a pic of him. He went through this same type of behavior change when I first got him...I replaced the UVA/B bulb and he started growing faster and eating much more. I'm hoping this is the problem now too. (I "adopted" him from my brother who got poor information about iguana care from the pet store that he bought him from.) His enclosure (basking spot) is about 90. The room is very warm in general since it is small, so the other areas of the cage are approximately 78 degrees.

Hey, beautiful ig!!!!!! And he looks pretty healthy too!!! I would try to elevate his basking area's temp. to 95 F. It should help, and also, try to keep the overall temperature at 85 F. Hot temperatures estimulate the iguana's natural behavior, so this should help.
Does he show any signs of breeding season???
Let us know if he is alright,

Thanks for the compliment! Ummm, as for signs of breeding season, I don't think so. He was showing signs of it awhile back...turning orange, change in habits, etc. but his orange coloring has faded, and the only thing that has stayed the same are his eating habits (not eating alot) Maybe that is it anyway?? I don't know. I'm not extremely worried yet. He still eats and I'm getting that new UVA/B bulb tomorrow. As for temps, I'm not sure how to keep it any warmer than I have it. I already have two basking bulbs. I have a regular daytime bulb and a ceramic heat fixture that stays on 24 hours a day. What else can I use to get temps even higher if need be??

Actually, if you already have 2 lamps and a ceramic heater, you don't need to worry about temperature!!! I don't know, what's the distance between the lamps and the ig??? Maybe the lamps are too high up.. I don't know.
But you shouldn't worry about it..
Good lick and take care,
