I just got my wc carpets several weeks ago. I got a trio, and the gravid female died, but the other two are doing gerat. So my advice to you, don't get a gravid female (which I'm sure you already knew how difficult they are to acclimate and the high mortality rate). But the remaining pair are doing fantastic. They just bred several days ago. My advice to you from my very minimal experience is give them a large (mine are in a 4x2x2 cage) cage with lots of cover (A large live ficus). They are rather shy at first and stress rather easily. Eating should not be a problem. They are voracious eaters. But if you give them a large cage, plenty of hiding and food and water (spray several times a day) and leave them alone, they should do just fine. Just do what ever you can to minimize stress. They are truely a really beautiful species and I enjoy alot.

that hardest thing when first getting wild cuaght carpets is getting them to drink. if you can get them hydrated the mortality rate decreases emensly.

I sugest that before you put them in the cage; give them water directly with a syringe. try to do it quickly as it can be very stress ful but if you get it done leave them in the cage alone for the next couple days. only coming in to feed and water and watch DON'T touch them for the first week or so unless somthing is looking bad.

usually if you get them to drink and keep the hydrate they bounce back to life.

I took mine right out of the box and straight into a tree where I soaked them for a long while. Mine drank right away. When shipping any cham I recommend that when you recieve them give them a nice long mist, to rehydrates them and minimizes stress.

Hey Dennis,

The only I would add is to stay away from suppliments for the first week or so. Let the toxins created from all the stress get out of the system.

Hydration cannot be stressed enough. The more water offered the quicker the kidneys can do their job.

Have you considered any of the recent captive hatched babies? I only say this because the last shipment of lateralis came in some time ago. If who ever holding them has not given them their best you could run into problems. The captive born usually settle in much better and will be with you longer. They might cost alittle more but you will be getting young animals instead of maybe old.

I think I saw a couple of ads on Fauna.

The space is always an issue once the addiction sets in. Give it alittle time and you won't have a single room in the house that doesn't have a cage!

Spring is a good time. The permits for the 2005 quota should be released soon. You should start seeing the imports returning in a month or so. Things usually really pick up around March.

They are doing great! The biggest male is now at 4.75". The biggest female is just behind him. Soon I'll have the rest of our animals back from Canada so we'll try breeding our unrealted male to the female that produced these babies. So hopefully we'll have more babies early winter.
Just recently had some fischeri multituberculatum hatch. These are pretty neat babies!

Just a note - these are basking fiends. I use 20w narrow beam spot lights (halogen, no UV blocking filter), at least one more basking spot than there are animals in the cage. The MR16, 12V bulbs are inexpensive, very easy for the animals to orient to and bask, and hold the beam intensity far into the cage (8-degree spread on the beam). I keep them in 2x2x3' cages at a minimum, drip system and lots of plants. My old male actually just passed on, he was 5 and a bit years old. I've got some F1 babies (I'm keeping these!) that hatched in November. This is one of my favorite species, they seem to have local races much as the panthers do - just not well documented. My favorite ones are dark black with white spots when resting, not the green ones. Good luck!
