Additional Sub-Forums...(please read)

Ratsnake Haven Jan 16, 2005 01:28 PM

I made a post on the "Picky Feeders" sub forum today. Check it out and make comments if you will. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how I could have handled the situation even better.

BTW, what's the deal with these Sub-Forums? I noticed one for Asian Ratsnakes. Does that mean that posts about Asian ratsnakes shouldn't appear on the main ratsnake forum? Are we going to start splitting the main forums into smaller forums for different species, subspecies, variants, etc? Would be nice if we knew what the general consensus is.

Thanks....TC

I think of it as a way to limit search times.
You have a problem with feeding and post it on the picky feeders sub-forum.
It should be quite easy to find that way.
I don't think there will much of a problem posting any of the rat snake topics here but over time I think the sub-catagories can help to find information more efficiently.

....and it gives me more forums to try and find photos to put up on

now instead of just going to the typical forums I go to... rat snakes, corn snakes, chondros (green tree pthons), and caging now to see if someone has posted a question i have to click on all these little things... they're just annoying!

they should post links to all the sub forums in the main forum. i like the sub forums for searching reasons... but for that I don't...

It would help if, when you got to the end of a strand in the Sub Forum, there was a link back to the main forum

The subforum stuff is still being worked on...the deluge of new forums addeded yesterday was sorta a beta test run for some things. There are other things that still haven't been done yet like navigation bars between the subforum and the parent forum. Give it time..it's coming.

Of course, if you have been reading a lot of posts on the subforums, it could take a lot of clicking.

We are simply adding new forums in a different format than people have been used to seeing on this site in the past. This will help provide a more focused search for individuals that simply want to go to something rather specific instead of wading through a general everything forum.

The general rat snake forum is still the general rat snake forum it's always been and will continue to be open to discussion any kind of rat snake. We are not forcing people with asian rat snakes to stay in their individual forum or anything like that. Those individuals who WANT to discuss specific topics and don't wish to wade through a forum of pretty much everything don't have to - they now have a place they can specifically go to if they choose to. Folks that find they don't like using subforums are not being forced to use them either - they have the option to stay away from them and stick to the main parent forum.

It's surprising how many 'new forum requests' we get. Some requests are rather frivilous while others are well thought out and good ones and some are in between. I hate turning people down because the real estate on the main page is pretty limited therefore I have to be pretty discerning on whether there is justification for a new forum being added. The subforum format is going to be good because it lets us put in more forums that people DO want without taking up that real estate space on the main forum page.

I am interested in a variety of Ratsnakes, even though I don't keep most of them. I enjoy a lot of the conversations on this forum on a variety of topics.

There are a lot of posts that I am not interested it, and I rely on scanning subject lines to eliminate those. Sometimes I probably miss good posts because the subject line isn't informative enough and other times I read uninterestng posts because the subject lines are misleading.

I scan 13 of these forums several times a week. I also read a few forums at a couple of other websites. I already waste too much time reading forums, and now, by splitting these up, you are forcing me to look more places to participate.

Frankly, what this means is I will no longer be able to see posts about Asian Rats, Field notes on rats, etc. because I don't have time to add another 10 forums to my scanning list. Effictively, you have reduced the value of these forums to me.

I don't think there was a problem. Why did we fix it?

Some of these forums move very slowly to start with let alone trying to get a sub forum to start up.I would think a decent, updated, feeding, husbandry faq sheet would be nice...Paul
