Snakes Shed Preservation

l_l3lackwolf_l Jan 16, 2005 01:41 PM

Hi.
I just started thinking of preserving the sheds of my corn snake, king snake, and burmese python...so far i have one complete shed of each ( Burm- 2 1/2 meters)...Any suggestions of how to preserve the skins without them getting spoiled?
Thanks,
Sheri

One really great way is to put them "under glass" in a picture frame. Unfortunately, standard-sized cheap frames don't really fit snake skins very well, and custom picture framing is not cheap. I have the first shed from my first snake still hanging on the wall. It is cool to look at it and then look at how big the snake is now. Lucky for me my wife is a custom picture framer.

Actually, come to think of it, if you are framing a shed from a hatchling you might get off without spending a fortune (you really pay for how much materials are used). If you know anyone in the business, ask them if they could use "scrap" glass or frame on a small shed. Duffy

what you could also do is get two long pieces of wood. put wax paper along one piece of wood, then the skin, then another piece of wax, and another piece of wood. either put this under your bed, or put a lot of clamps all along the board. or put a bunch of books on the top. after a month or so this will preserve.

With a few of my snakes, I've saved each one's nice sheds from hatchling through adult. I then arranged and sandwiched them between two layers of laminating film, and pressed with a warm iron (using a press cloth). Some are on display, along with a photo of the animal, on matte board. Others I've rolled and saved in a poster tube.

I just got a perfect shed from my mama albino burm, almost 14ft. I stuff mine in a big trash bag, and someday I'm dumping it in someone yard! lol
