Western blind snake setup

caecilianman02 Jan 16, 2005 01:55 PM

Hi there:

I just designed a vivarium for a small Western blind snake. It has been very hard for me to find any information on their care. This is what I have so far:

tank- 2.5 gallon all-glass aquarium with tight-fitting screen lid
substrate- on the bottom is a layer of very moist pea gravel. On top of this is a higher layer of only slightly moist natural soil. This is then covered with completely dry sandy soil, and topped with dry sphagnum moss, to create a moisture gradient.
water and landscaping- on one side of the substrate surface is a very shallow water dish, with a suction-cup fern sticking to the back of the tank. On the other side there are two small, overlapping flat rocks.
The temperature of the room the vivarium is in is 76 degrees farenheit. Is this a good start?

I'd make the substrate simply a mixture of moist sand and potting soil, and that's it. And it's doubtful a blind snake will even come up to the surface(some will), let alone drink out of a water bowl. The moss at the top of the mixture substrate would be good. I can't wait to hear your plans for feeding....
