Question about Dwarf Beardies?

SteveISU Jul 04, 2003 08:08 PM

Can anyone tell me where I can find Dwarf Bearded Dragons? Also, how large do they get and typically how much are they? Thanks.

Mess Up??? How so if there is three species of Dwarf Bearded Dragons recognized??? (i.e. Pogona Minor, Pogona minima, and Pogona mitchelli)

grimdog Jul 04, 2003 10:10 PM

oh sorry, i thought you meant dwarf pogona viticeps. Those are mess ups. they were being discussed earlier this week. I have never seen them offered. Just regular inland, rankins, and maybe one other.

Those three species are not going to be found as pets. If you want a smaller dragon, you'd best look for a rankins dragon. I have one, but I am not able to give you a place where you can purchase them.

How are the Rankins?? Same as the Beardies??? What is there max attainable size?

CheriS Jul 04, 2003 10:44 PM

are 6 inch snout to vet and do not have the beard like bearded dragons, but appear like them in all other characteristics except size

LLLreptile sells rankins

There are those plus a few others that are smaller
Pogona micropidota (Drysdale River Bearded Dragon)
Pogona nullarbor (Banded Bearded Dragon)
Pogona Herny-lawsonii(Lawson's Bearded Dragon aka Rankins)

These and the ones you mentioned are usually 6-8 inches snout to vent, there is also a possible ninth species, similair to the henry-lawsonii... that is still being decided.

You can also find a cross between a vitticeps and a henry-lawsonii(rankin) called a vittikin these are sometimes called Dwarf bearded dragons

And I would just like to say thank you to all for being so kind. I've been dying to get a beardie but my wife is not keen on a 20 inch lizard. Though she puts up with my Leo, turtle, and Snow corn. Thanks again.

You also might want to check around with some breeders or post on some wanted boards. There are many breeders that have dragons that are vitticeps but under the normal size due to the line breed.

If your looking for a pet, these little ones do make great pets. Also, this is the one reptile that most women, even if they do not like reptiles usually fall in love with due to their social personality and interaction with people.

I have 8 right now from other breeders that we are working with to see if we can increase size in them, four are healthy otherwise, 4 need some medical care and may improve in time. Usually the breeder that get these tiny ones try to find good homes for them and offer them at no or minimal cost for that.

Hehe, buy it when it is a baby, around 6 to 8 inches..I am sure your wife will fall in love with it and by the time it is full grown (most seem to reach 17-19 inches in captivity, only heard of a few that were 20 inches or longer and those typically game from German Giant lines).
