New Tank

Triad Jan 16, 2005 03:25 PM

I've got a 20 gallon tank (I bleached it, it had another animal in it).

I would like to know if it is ok if I move Kalypso into that tank.

I have her on a papertowel susbtrate. This will give me an opportunity to move things around and give her more hides and such.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Im new to this forum, how old is your leo? If its 9 months - adulthood it is recommended that you put her in a minimum of a 15 gallon tank.

I though ten was fine for up to 3 adults as long as you have enugh hides and stuff? I have 2 adult females in a ten, with lots of hides, some going up, using up most of the tank. Is this too small for them?

Yes that is definently to little of a space. An adult leo really should be in a 20 gal, up to 2 is the maximum for it. The more hides you have the less free space you have and a ten gallon doenst have much of free space with a dry hide, humid hide, and water dish and then if you add even more hides that about 25 sq inches which is only 5" by 5". So yes you should put them in a 20 gal.

Rule of thumb is 10 gallons per leo. So if you have 3 you need a 30 gallon tank.

She's an adult, and she's doing just terrific in her ten but I am thinking about moving her to the 20 just so she has more room.

Well actualy that 10 gallon rule isnt right. For one adult they should be kept in nothing smaller than a 15 gal. Up to 3 (thats kinda pushing it) can fit in a 20 gallon long. But i prefer only 2 per 20 gal.

But really, 10 gallon is the minimum you can maintain an adult leo in. Sure, 15 is better (though actually a 15 isn't much bigger at all), but you can maintain a healthy, happy leo in a 10 gallon. I have heard of people keeping 2 or 3 adults in them too...I wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't suggest doing it though. That's not really a good way to keep them. It's just the same as how people say 40 gallon breeder is the minimum for a bearded dragon or a uromastyx. I have both and feel that a 40 is too small (that's why I'm building new bigger cages for them). But just the same, i have seen people keeping pairs and trios in them. I once saw a tank at a local reptile shop with 5 or 6 adult bearded dragons in a 40 gallon breeder, and I've seen the same with uromastyx....I actually got my beardie there and he was just filled with parasites, so that's not really a good place to go anyways.

The 10 gallon tank thing for leos (like the 40 gallon with beardies and uros) is sort of just a rule as to what the minimum you need to provide is. Some people break this rule, others go way above and beyond, but I don't think you can say that you can't maintain a healthy animal in tanks those sizes. If not then there's something wrong with the other aspects of husbandry.

There is no way you can compare the pet shops and how people usually keep them. For 1 pet shops only have them there for a little time, also the parasites give the pet shop more money by either selling parasite medicines or hoping people by another one from them. But any how back to the topic, if you put an adult blizzard in a 10 gallon tank for a while he will get stressed out and turn a darker color (other things can cause this too but for this example nothing is wrong with it) but if you'd just keep him in a 20 gallon tank he will not be this color. I bought my blizzard from a petshop, but i know the guy personally and he used to be my science teacher and he takes care of his animals. He had it in a 10 gallon tank so that it didnt take up too much space and again petshops don't have the reptile for its whole life only for a very little while so that is why it is ok. Any how the blizzard was alright, no parasites or anything, the temps were perfect and all that. But he was a darker color, want to guess why? Any how when i brought him home and he got all settled her turned back to his original white color. The only reason people can't tell with other morphs is because they dont change dirastic colors like this, but they will still act the same and not show to many signs of stress. So basically a blizzard proves this theory wrong and that means you should go with my rule, minimum of 15 (suggested 20) gallons.

How long have you had your leos? I think about 2 months ago you said you were going to get one. Not much time for expierence, so how could you really know that 10 gallons is enough space without a lot of personal expierence to back it up? Just a question.
