Lighting and Filter needed?!

GreenAnoleManiac Jan 16, 2005 04:25 PM

Hello all, I currently have quite a few reptiles and as I stumbled into the Pet store today I noticed they had some pretty interesting little creatures, via, Fire-bellied Toads. FBT are indeed, one of the rare reptiles I've never had the pleasure to work with or have as a pet, so I was wondering if you HALF TO HAVE a light and a filter for the water, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you, all.

There is no need for a filter if the water area is small and can be changed regularly. If there is a larger volume of water in the tank it can be helpful to add a small submersible filter and only do partial water changes once a week or so. Lighting isn't required if the temperature in the room they are kept is warm enough and there are no live plants in the cage. Good luck,

Hey, just out of curiosity, can you use a somewhat small fish filter as a water filter?

I have 3 fire bellies in a 10 gallon tank. They have a fake log to help hold up the gravel on one side, then I have a little filter on the other side to filter the water. the filter is made so it will filter shallow water, like 3-4 inches. you can get them at petsmart or petco. no light or heater or anything like that. our room temp is in the 78 degree range. i also have some feeder guppies in with them. they haven't been able to catch them to eat them so they started to have babies. they are all doing great.

How much was the filter?

not sure. my friend gave me the filter. i think they run $10-20 dollars. it works real good. then you have to get the filter pads. those are like $8 dollars for a box of 4. thats in my area. may be different in your area.

I have 4 FBT, I just got 3 of them so they are being quarntined right now. I have them in a 10 gallon tank with a Fluval filter. It works in about 4 inches of water. Cost about 20 dollars. in my large tank that they will all end up in, I have a Whisper 10i filter. I highly recommend this one. It works in as little as 2 inches of water and is about 14 dollars.

I keep my tanks filled about 1/3 up with water and have gravel on the bottom and a few rocks and things for them to climb on to. I have a light for both of the tanks. Just and aquarium hood light. Helps heat them a bit plus lets me see them better. My room stays colder so the light is great. Temps usually around 70 to 75 right where it should be.
