People in the lower states.....

r3ptile Jan 16, 2005 05:35 PM

I was just wondering if anyone here that lives in the hot lower states (ie. TX, FL) leaves their cage outside in the summer. Perhaps in the backyard or in a screened in patio/porch. I may be moving from NY to FL soon and the idea of giving the burm fresh air and doing away with all these electrical heating devices at least for the summer, would be nice.

I could be way off on this one but I would be afraid of parasites and such foreign to him. I wouldn't leave an exotic animal outside unatended for a summer but giving him some sun and natural heat and humidity would be great I agree.

I wouldn't do it. I rolled one of my cages outside, I live in Maryland, and my temps shot through the roof. With no wind to cool the temps down a bit it's like leaving your dog in the car with the windows rolled up. I noticed it early and took him out, then brought the cage inside but it was not a good idea overall. Maryland gets hot but the lower states get even hotter.

you have to provide a good shady area if you do this. i've never done it with a snake, but when i had iguanas in wisconsin they spent alot of summertime time outside, and now in fl my melleri chameleon spends most of the time outside. you loose alot of control when doing this, but if you're already in a sub-tropical place and its a tropical animal, its basically just a more natural simulation of "home". As for parasites, i've never noticed any of them picking anything up, but its only matural that you should do fecals more often b/c of the increased risks. You do need to use like wire or mesh on at least one or peferably two sides though, a glass or all-wood cage would shoot the temps up dangerously, i would stay away from glass entirely outdoors. i guess thats why most people dont do this with snakes, i suspect they would rub themselves badly on all-wire sides. plus it makes the escape factor pretty risky
