Red Leg?????

marcantony Jan 16, 2005 07:27 PM

I have an AHF. When I was cleaning it's tank, I took a look underneath the frog. The belly looked somewhat pinkish, but since this is the only frog I have had experience with, I'm not sure if this is the natural coloration. I have posted a picture of the abdomen, and I would appreciate anyones opinion as to whether this might be redleg disease or not. Thanks.

It doesnt look like it. How is he acting? Is he eating and everything?

Thanks for the reply. It seems to be acting as normal as it ever does. It is still eating, and it didn't seem too thrilled when I took it out of it's tank to put it in a holding tank, and it really didn't care for me turning it upside down to take the picture. I've just had a very hard time finding good pictures to show what redleg really looks like.

It is hard to use pictures to identify redleg as the reddening of the ventral surface my occur only close to death or even after death or not at all.
Red-leg is frequently caused by bacteria in the aeromonad group (although other bacteria are implicated in the cause) and usually only affects, stressed animals or animals that have been kept in dirty and/or crowded conditions. You cannot prevent exposure to the potential pathogen as it occurs in all open aquatic enviroments (in other words you would need to keep your frog in a closed sterile system).
