Crickets and waxworms instead?

demonusdrummer Jan 16, 2005 08:18 PM

Hey there. Ive been really interested in getting a Horned lizard because they seem really awesome. im still researching about them and figuring things out. I think that feeding ants would be kind of a pain. So...i was wondering would small dusted crickets, mealies, waxworms, fruit flies or any of that could be used instead of ants? can they feed on these instead of ants and still be healthy and happy? Many say that crickets can be given and such, so could this work? thank you

HLs are adapted to eat numerous small prey items. The key being small. Mini mealworms and small crickets (wax worms should only be fed to adults) work but why not include the ants. They are $13.95 with the shipping for 500 ants which will last a month for 1 adult when offered with the small crickets and mealworms.Even though it has been proven HLs can survive without ants why deprive an animal of it's favorite food which it is well adapted to eat and digest? Back a long time back I kept a desert who was wild caught... he ate ants and crickets... he also loved small amounts of dampened dry cat food.. I do know that the ants have an acid the HLs need... so you would do best to figure this in... Mine was more than slightly tame and would come to the glass and "beg" when he wanted food or attention... I took him out to the mountains in San Diego to graze on his ants often... and we would capture and bring jars loaded back with us... I have since learned no all hornys are this friendly and most do not like to wear jewelled leashes(Fluggle did) I used to take him on his leash pinned to my shirt and my 6'Burm. Python to the beach and lay out with them.... anyway you do need ants but some will do well on a mixed diet... some I understand will not touch anything but ants... Cat

You have to tell me about your trips out to feed your HL. That is pretty interesting.
